Conduire à Dubaï : guide pratique visiteurs

Licences, Salik, parking and road rules before you rent

Dubai is built for the car: wide highways, bilingual signage, and most landmarks a short drive apart. If you want the freedom to move between the Marina, Downtown or beyond on your own schedule, renting is often the simplest option. This guide covers licences, Salik, parking, speed rules and etiquette — with official sources. When you are ready, browse our fleet or message us on WhatsApp.

What you need to rent and drive in Dubai

Legal minimums for visitors

According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Light Motor Vehicle Handbook used in Dubai driving institutes, visitors who are not permanent residents and want to drive while visiting Dubai must:

  • be at least 18 years of age;
  • hold a valid visit visa;
  • hold a valid international driver’s licence according to RTA policy.

RTA’s own FAQ on international driving licences states that you can drive in Dubai with an International Driving Licence issued abroad only if you are on a visit visa, and only for a light vehicle or a motorcycle. Transit-visa holders need a valid International Driving Licence and approval from the insurance company before driving a Dubai-registered vehicle.

The official UAE Government portal (`u.ae`) sets the minimum age to obtain a UAE light-vehicle licence at 18 (17 for motorcycles). That is the legal floor for licensing — rental companies may set a higher age.

Avantgarde rental conditions (on top of the law)

Our published rental terms add commercial conditions on top of the law (always re-check the live page before travel):

  • You must be at least 25 and have held your licence for at least 12 months (licence in your own name);
  • passport/ID, address and payment details for the contract;
  • many listed nationalities (UK, USA, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, Australia and others on the page) may rent on a visit/transit/tourist visa with their original home licence;
  • some nationalities need an English embassy/consulate translation;
  • all other countries: a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) or a temporary Traffic Department licence;
  • GCC nationals: valid GCC licence; UAE residents: UAE licence mandatory (foreign IDP is not enough).
  • A separate patch to align the public conditions page with this minimum age 25 rule is prepared and awaits approval.

Practical tip: get your IDP in the country that issued your licence before you fly. An IDP is a translation companion to your original licence — carry both.

Salik tolls: how Dubai’s electronic tolls work

Dubai uses Salik, an electronic road-toll system. Vehicles need a Salik tag on the windscreen; gates deduct the toll automatically when you pass — you do not stop to pay.

Official guidance published on dubai.ae (Government of Dubai) describes variable tolls by time of day:

  • Peak (Monday–Saturday, 06:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00): AED 6 per crossing;
  • Off-peak: AED 4 per crossing;
  • Free daily between 01:00 and 06:00;
  • Sundays: flat AED 4, excluding the free early-morning window;
  • during Ramadan, peak hours can change.

Passing a gate without a tag, or with insufficient balance and without recharging within the period indicated by Salik/dubai.ae, can lead to fines. Always check dubai.ae – Road toll in Dubai (Salik) and salik.ae for the latest gates and tariffs before you drive.

On a rental car: you normally do not buy your own tag. Crossings are billed per your agreement (often at return). Ask us on WhatsApp how Salik is charged on your booking.

Parking with RTA

Paid public parking in Dubai is organised in zones with different codes and tariffs. According to RTA’s “Pay Public Parking Fees” service, paid bays use zone codes (A, B, C, D, F, G, H and others) with different tariffs and hours — many first- and second-category zones run roughly Monday–Saturday 08:00–22:00, while zone F (Media City / Internet City / Knowledge Village) often ends earlier. Check the plate on site and the official RTA fee table before you leave the car.

RTA lists payment via SMS, WhatsApp, the RTA Dubai app and the Parkin app. Keep the confirmation on your phone. Do not assume hotel or mall parking is free without checking signs.

Speed limits, radars and fines

Dubai’s roads are heavily monitored. Always follow the posted speed limit; it changes between freeways, city roads and works zones. Dubai Police publishes street speed limits.

In a March 2025 briefing reported by WAM, Dubai Police listed AI-radar fines that scale with excess speed, for example AED 300 (more than 20 km/h over), 600 (>30), 700 (>40), 1,000 (>50), 2,000 (>60) and 3,000 (>80), sometimes with impoundment and black points. The same briefing cites AED 1,000 for running a red light, 400 for no seat belt and 800 for phone use while driving, plus offences such as unsafe following distance or failing to give way at pedestrian crossings. Confirm current amounts on official Dubai Police channels before you travel.

For renters: fines during the hire are usually charged under the rental contract. Never assume a “tolerance” above the posted limit.

Fuel

Petrol stations are dense across Dubai and the main highways. Major networks such as ENOC/EPPCO and ADNOC Distribution accept common card payments at the pump or in-store (see each operator’s payment pages for current methods). Return the car with the same fuel level as at handover, or refuelling charges may apply under our terms.

Driving etiquette that keeps you safe

Drive on the right. Wear a seat belt in every seat. Keep the phone on hands-free. Signal early, respect lane rules, and give way at marked pedestrian crossings. In rain or sandstorms, slow down and increase following distance. Keep your licence, ID and rental papers in the car. On days you prefer not to drive, Visit Dubai also lists taxis and car rentals among everyday ways to get around.

FAQ

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in Dubai as a tourist?

It depends on your nationality and visa. RTA says an IDP issued abroad can be used on a visit visa for a light vehicle or motorcycle. Our terms list nationalities that may rent on their original licence and those that must bring an IDP or embassy translation. When in doubt, message us on WhatsApp with your nationality before you fly.

How does Salik work on a rental car?

The car already has a Salik tag. Tolls at the official dubai.ae rates are recorded against the vehicle and billed per your rental agreement. You usually do not open a personal Salik account for a short rental.

Where can I check parking prices?

On the zone plate at the bay and on RTA’s parking fee tables (codes A–H and others). Pay via RTA app, Parkin, SMS or WhatsApp as indicated by RTA.

What are the speeding fines?

They scale with how much you exceed the posted limit. Dubai Police / WAM (March 2025) cite examples from AED 300 (over 20 km/h) up to AED 3,000 (over 80 km/h), sometimes with impoundment and black points. Always verify on official Dubai Police channels.

What is the minimum age to rent with Avantgarde?

You must be at least 25 and have held your licence for at least 12 months. Read /conditions-de-location or confirm on WhatsApp if you have any doubt.

Can UAE residents drive on a foreign licence?

No. For residents, a UAE driving licence is mandatory (RTA handbook and our terms). Foreign IDPs are for eligible visitors on visit visas, not for residence visa holders.
